The Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES) 2022

The Gerontech and Innovation Expo cum Summit (GIES) was held on 2-5 November. It was our honour to be invited by the organizer, to showcase our pdsp.hk website and EC Screen App in the exhibition.

Pdsp.hk Website aims to provide support for people with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia, and their caregivers by providing knowledge and practical caring skills to general public, family caregivers and formal caregivers.

EC Screen App is a quick cognitive screening tool which developed by the Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing provided assistant in development. The app consists several questions  and can be completed within a few minutes. It also provides useful information and links to relevant online resources about dementia.

The exhibition is ended with joy. A number of visitors no matter family caregivers or formal caregivers, has downloaded the EC Screen App to conduct test for their family members or service users. Pdsp.hk Website can be used if there are family members or service users who diagnosed with dementia.

Once again, thank you for inviting to promote gerontech in the expo and thank you for those who come. Hope can see you next year

3-day Seminar - Understanding the Distressed Behaviour of People with Dementia in Hong Kong

The 3-day seminar – Understanding the Distressed Behaviour of People with Dementia in Hong Kong, jointly organised by JCCPA and University of Worcester, was successfully conducted on 16 to 18 November. It was our great honour to invite the following speakers from various professions to share the knowledge of dementia and its distressed behavior:

  • Prof Dawn Brooker MBE
  • Prof Timothy Kwok
  • Prof Allen Lee
  • Dr Lisa Au
  • Dr Kenny Chui
  • Dr Adrian Wong
  • Franco Cheng and
  • Natalie Lai

There were over 30 participants joined the seminar. During the seminar, not only theory was discussed but also practical skills in daily work, for example, to understand more about adversities facing by frontline staff and caregivers, and how professional staff could facilitate them in daily healthcare. The seminar provided all-round understandings towards dementia as well as overseas experience.

JCCPA offers professional training courses from time to time for staff members of the dementia care sector. By integrating theory and knowledge about dementia, service experience and study results, we seek to help professional workers better understand dementia and contribute to enhancing care skills and service levels. "Dementia's Secret Angel" mobile application won the Gold Award of the Smart People (Smart Inclusion) Award

The “Hong Kong ICT Awards” organized by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service held an award ceremony, and the “Dementia’s Secret Angel ” mobile application won the gold award of the “Smart People (Smart Inclusion) Award”. This is also the first time that we have won the award for Information Technology.

Hong Kong is facing the issue of ageing population, and the number of lost elderly people with dementia is increasing. Caregivers need an effective way to find missing people with dementia. Thanks to donations from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, we, together with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and St. James’ Settlement, launched The Jockey Club Caring Communities for Dementia Campaign, using the mobile application “Dementia’s Secret Angel” and the Bluetooth electronic device “Ibeacon” to collaborate with the public and Bluetooth positioning technology to use technology to help find lost elderly people with dementia.

When an elderly person carrying an “Ibeacon” goes missing, the caregiver reports the loss on the “Dementia”s Secret Angel” app. The “Dementia Angels” installed with “Dementia’s Secret Angel” uses Bluetooth instead of eyes. If a lost elder is near the “Dementia Angel, the “Dementia Angel” will anonymously share location clues to help take care of and track the whereabouts of the elderly.
