Summer Activity

JCCPA organized a Summer Photo Frames making workshop for our members which helps reality orientation of people with dementia. Such kind of “seasonal” activities would guides them to be familiar with their environment, enhance their understanding of the date, time, place, people and things around them. It can also train their hand-eye coordination and concentration.

JCCPA organizes snacks and housework activities for our elder members every week such as preparing special cuisine or carrying out different housework. A dumplings making group was organised recently. Since some of the elder members are housewives, they find it easy and confident in making the dumplings. Such activity can train their concentration, execution and memory. The elder members often share with our staff the authentic way in making dumplings in turn.

Jockey Club Caring Communities for Dementia Campaign

JCCPA in collaboration with The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and St. James’ Settlement organized the “Release of survey on the prevalence of people with dementia get lost in Hong Kong cum Kick of Ceremony of Jockey Club Caring Communities for Dementia Campaign” (CCD Campaign) on 4th May. We were delighted friends from mass media attended the event and gave a helping hand in promoting care for dementia to the public. We were also honoured to have the following honourable guests to officiating the kick of ceremony, they are Mr. Horace Lit, Senior Charities Manager, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Prof. Timothy Kwok, Director of JCCPA, Prof. Gary Chan, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Ms. Josephine Lee, Chief Executive Officer, St. James’ Settlement.

We conducted a survey about the prevalence of people with dementia get lost early this year and announced the result during the event. The result showed that over 30% of people with dementia lost their way home before, over 80% of caregivers worried their family members with dementia would get lost again. Times have changed, around 30% of family members use electronic devices to contact or find relatives with dementia, such as mobile phones or electronic tracking devices. It shows that the use of electronic devices in finding people will become a major trend. The ibeacon tracking device and “Dementia’s Secret Angel” APP which produced by the CCD Campaign meets this trend.

We encourage general public download the “Dementia’s Secret Angel” APP and in collaboration with the free-of-charge iBeacon device to caregivers in need, everyone of us could offer a hint to the caregivers when people with dementia get lost.

JCCPA organized an iBeacon distribution in our Shatin office and Lok Fu on 22 May. Following an overwhelming response, quotas filled in no time and near a hundred of caregivers are benefited. Our staff and volunteers assisted caregivers in downloading the “Dementia’s Secret Angel” APP and operating with the iBeacon device. We would like to deliver our most sincere thanks to all the volunteers who come over in such a hot day.
