Press Conference - Survey Reveals Knowledge of Dementia among
Health and Social Care Undergraduates in HK
The Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing and the School of Public
Health and Primary Care at The Chinese University of Hong Kong
(CUHK) have jointly conducted a survey during April to June 2009,
aimed at evaluating the level of dementia knowledge among undergraduates
in health and social care fields and their competence in working
with dementia sufferers. Survey details were to be elaborated in
a press conference which was held on World Alzheimer’s Day,
21 September. In the survey, over 200 final year undergraduates
from 4 different health and social care disciplines (including
medical, occupational therapy, nursing and social work) responded
to the questionnaires of the survey. Results showed that social
work students attained the lowest self-efficacy and had the least
hours of dementia education, in comparison with students in the
other 3 disciplines. This suggested that social work students might
be less competent in delivering dementia-related care to patients
after graduation. Please click here for the press release.
